MY JOURNAL

During the Summer of 2013 we will travel to Alaska twice in our attempt to once again capture the sights of the 49th State.  We will once again fly into Katmai National Park to view and photograph the great Coastal Brown Bears as well as any other available wildlife that is there.  We will also spend time on the Kenai Peninsula in search of Bald Eagles and the magnificent landscape that is abundant in the Kenai Mountains.  We will also fly across the Cook Inlet and through Lake Clark Pass and into the Lake Clark National Park region.  This is magnificent mountain, river, and lake scenery abundant with all kinds of wildlife.

In June of 2014 we will go to the Galapagos Islands, a place that has always intrigued me.  I know that the up close and personal photography that we will experience there will be a test of my ability to shoot at close ranges instead of my usual long range super-telephoto photography.  We will be on a special photographers cruise aboard the National Geographic Endeavor and this should be a very special trip.

We have already decided to return to Tanzania, once again in the month of February but in the year of 2015.  We enjoyed the calving experience and the enhanced interaction between the species that it brings.  The cats of the Serengeti are especially intriguing and it my hope to have a little more success in photographing Leopards this time as that was one of the species that, to a great degree, eluded us on our recent trip.  Having said that, our recent trip was nothing short of amazing and once you have been there, as a photographer, I think that you are able to make the return with a different mindset photographically speaking.  I am anxiously awaiting what the next trip will bring and what I will bring home in the way of photographic memories.

Prior to our late Summer of 2012 trip to Alaska I was able to purchase Canon’s latest DSLR, the EOS 1DX.  All I can say about this camera is that it was everything that it was cracked up to be and it gives the photographer the ability to do amazing things.  I have not even begun to explore its full capabilities but it will surely be fun trying.  Prior to our trip to Africa I upgraded from my Canon 500 f4 lens to the new Canon 600 II f4 lens.  All I can say is that I was very excited about the possibilities that these two pieces of equipment could do together.  Africa showed me that this is a phenomenal combination of equipment that enables the photographer to do things that were not possible with older equipment and less sophisticated equipment.  Now Canon has just come out with the next generation of Super-Telephoto Zoom lenses, the 200-400 with the built-in 1.4x Extender.  I am anxious to get my hands on one and see what it can do because if what I have already read is true this lens should open up even new and more exciting photographic possibilities than ever before experienced.
